Gynecomastia- Swelling in male breast

 What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which one or both male breasts have an abnormal increase in size and result in a feminine appearance.

In this article, we will discuss the causes of Gynecomastia, and also the available treatment of Gynecomastia

This is a common condition and it affects approximately 40-60% of males at some point, usually as a teen. In addition, there is an increase of glandular breast tissue and usually includes an increase of adipose tissue as well.

An increase of adipose tissue in the chest area without the involvement of glandular breast tissue is called pseudo-gynecomastia.

What are the causes of Gynecomastia?

The truth of the matter is that the causes are unclear.

Obesity is considered the largest contributing factor to pseudo-gynecomastia. For other cases, it is more difficult to determine the cause.

It is estimated that in more than 25% of reported cases of gynecomastia the cause is unknown.

A possible contributor may lie in hormones. Since the condition is common during puberty it is possible that hormonal fluctuation is the cause of gynecomastia.

An increase of estrogen and a decrease of androgens has also been identified in some cases as the cause. Another reason is steroid use which can also increase breast size.

Some medications have been named as possibly contributing to this condition along with marijuana and excessive alcohol consumption.

With the increase of people seeking medical help, including surgery, for this condition in the past decade it is speculated that the growth hormones in the meat supply may be a contributing factor.

What are some options for treating Gynecomastia?

Treatment options include reducing risk factors

  • If you are using alcohol or marijuana you should discontinue use.
  • Steroid use should also be discontinued. This may be the only treatment you need.

  • Some cases are clearly a weight issue and can be easily treated by decreasing the amount of food eaten and increasing daily exercise.

  • Aerobic exercises should be done daily for basic health as well as to decrease fat tissue in the chest area.

  • Walking, running, and swimming are all good exercises to include in your daily routine.

  • Weight lifting routines for upper body strength can decrease breast size as well.

A routine that includes more than just the chest should be followed.

  • If hormonal factors are the cause then hormonal therapy can be used to treat the condition.

Although, it is unclear how effective hormonal therapy is in treating gynecomastia.

Before pursuing any course of action, treatments should be discussed with your doctor.

Each case is different and what works for one person may not work for the next.

In most cases, if the condition hasn't corrected itself within one to three years it isn't going to. One other point to consider is the possibility that it is a symptom of a more serious condition.

Seek professional guidance to find the appropriate treatment for you.
